Photographing the Devils 10 Trail Race

When the Mountain Mxn - a motley Cape Town running crew - hosts a trail running event, you can bet it’s going to be a little unhinged. The Devil’s 10 was no exception: a fast-paced loop around the iconic Devil’s Peak.

On a Friday afternoon, sunset looming, the crew assembled below Table Mountain, eyeing out the route, all ready to throw down.

The course started at the chains on Tafelberg Road, powered up and over the saddle, down Newlands Ravine, looped around the blockhouse and along the contour path before dropping down to the road for the final stretch back to the start.

It was an invite-only event; a tight-knit crew of friends, eager to punish each other from start to finish, and high-five in the aftermath. I photographed the masochistic festivities, capturing smiles and suffering until after the sunset.

Well done to Skye Clarke and Ayeshie Specker, the first man and woman to cross the chains. And both Flat Rock Endurance athletes, for what it’s worth.

Until next year…☠️
