Amphitheatre Workshop - March 2021

Tugela Falls Purple Dusk.jpg

Every March, Mark Dumbleton and I lead a photography workshop in the Drakensberg’s Amphitheater. The main photographic highlights of the trip are the Tugela Falls, Sentinel Peak, Devil’s Tooth and the Ifidi Valley. This year we the weather was on our side, and the falls were in full flood. Granted, that meant we endured a lot of rain and mist, but I’d say it was a worthwhile trade. This is a spectacle I hope everyone gets to experience.

Another highlight for me was photographing the moon setting over the Tugela Falls and valleys below. We woke up at 3 am and hiked into position. Leaving our warm, wind-free tents behind, we braved some truly frigid winds that howled in from Lesotho. When our fingers were too cold to press the shutters, we huddled together behind a rocky ledge for shelter. The sunrise was welcomed, thawing the ice from our frozen bags. At sunrise, I managed to let my phone slip from an open pocket and plummet over the edge of the cliff. The phone was insured, but all the behind-the-scenes images were lost. That sucked. But just like the rain and wind, it’s all part of the adventure.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Clint, Neville, Koos, Kirsty, Simone, and Stephen; we couldn’t have asked for a better group. You are welcome again anytime.

Below is a selection of my favourite images from the workshop. I hope you enjoy them. If you’d like to book your place at an upcoming workshop, contact me.
